Freelancing is a word for performing a job or service without the promise of a long-term contract. Freelancing comes from the word "free" and it means freelancers are free agents. For some, freelancing provides them with flexibility to balance professional life with other priorities. Numerous studies have been done on how having control over your time can improve your wellbeing. This has led companies like Google to allow employees to spend 20% of their workweek on independent pursuits that might result in new products or innovations that could benefit Google's business.

There is no straightforward answer to what exactly freelancing is. It's a term that is heavily used these days, but most people have definitions for it that are different from one another. This leads to confusion in communication between clients and freelancers because the client expects the freelancer to deliver something they know about, but the freelance essentially has its own definition of what that is. My definition for freelancing would be working with multiple people on different projects or taking temporary assignments where you are not necessarily hired with an obligation to stay in the company with them even if things go well.

In the age of digitalization and globalization, it is not uncommon to simultaneously live as a freelancer or contractor as well as nine-to-fiver. In other words, you can have multiple clients and employers at once while being able to keep your full time job. However, before you take the leap into freelance world, there are a number of things that should be considered first. You need to properly set up a business plan for yourself before quitting your previous job if you want to bet on success from the start.

There are many ways to become a freelancer. The most common would be starting on sites such as UpWork or TaskRabbit, or on your own website. If you have a digital product, following an affiliate marketing strategy is also a great option for enhancing your business and earning more each month without the need of a new customer. Another way is to provide consulting services in companies that face similar challenges that you did before becoming one yourself. You can even partner with experts in the same field and move into their line of work if they want someone else working side-by-side with them on projects from time to time.

What are the steps to freelancing? Create a portfolio or resume demonstrating your skills, successes, and rates. Get your name out there by networking with other freelancers. Make it known that you're available for hire. Connect with potential clients through LinkedIn to remain in touch during off hours or on days either of you has free time to work together. Offer help solving their problems pro bono as much as possible to make your connections worth more than just transactional business relationships.

The technical answer is quite simple - work for yourself, rather than working for an employer. The more practical answer would be to start by identifying what your skills are and if they could be sold as a service on the open market, with the most important ones beginning with "competent". It's often necessary for freelancers to find ways to provide services that don't yet exist (such as teaching English in China) or services that people might not know about (such as accounting). It can also take some time before you're established enough to make enough income from it. So good judgement is required when deciding whether now is the right time to quit your job and become self-employed.
