The national median salary for an accountant is $55,000. If you are mainly looking to get away from the constraints imposed by a 9-5 job then freelancing may be just what you're after. You can set your hours and decide where you want to work, but it will mean less benefits that come with full-time employment. There are many restrictions when it comes to taxes and legislation though so having an accountant keeps things organized. To become a certified public accountant requires 4 years of college education including courses in accounting; 3 years in business; 2 years of upper level classes; exams totalling 460 hours - this is in addition to the 8 weeks of internship needed each year over four summers (600 total hours).

At most firms, they are paid per hour. Once you have an hourly rate based on their expertise, the company calculates how many hours they need each accountant to work each year. At most companies this is one-hundred forty hours per year or about twenty-four hours per month for a full time freelancer accountancy position. Freelancers may be able to negotiate with the company on this base pay depending on their experience level and available availability. The average hourly rate for an accountant with less than five years of experience ranges from $25 -$40/hour in the United States, but can vary according to location.

Can you be a little more specific? There are a lot of factors that go into how much a freelance accountant will take in. I'm not sure what the following information may be useful for, but I can tell you from experience it's impossible to know exactly what earnings will look like as a freelancer. Here is some additional information from across the internet about average price ranges, which accountants might enter their years of experience and zip code details to get an idea of how much they could make as well as expected market rates for each category.

Good question! It can vary quite a bit based on experience, geography and the year. According to salary site PayScale, data from 2013 shows that accountants with less than one year of work experience make about USD $26 per hour on average. Salaries increase as you gain experience and go up to around 33K with at least 5 years of work experience. And if you're looking for an international job, salaries start at around 35K - 38K per annum in China or Russia and goes up to 50-55k US dollars per annum with 3-4 years of work experience in Switzerland or Singapore.

It can vary wildly depending on quantity, complexity, and location of each contract. For example, one accountant made $5 per hour working in a stock room, another was paid $1/hour to process insurance claim payments . It is hard to compute the average compensation for the profession because there are so many possibilities when it comes to these numbers. You could spend hours calculating them all or you could just Google it. The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not have an explicit listing for "Freelance Accountant." The closest they have is "Accountants" which lists hourly averages between $24-$46 in certain regions of the US. Presumably this includes freelance accountants as well but I cannot say with certainty.

The salary range for accountants is also vast. Freelance accountants can make anywhere from $25,000 a year upwards to six figures a year depending on the freelance accountant's qualifications and experience. It will often take an accountant 4-5 years of experience before they are able to charge up to $125 per hour. Meanwhile with only two or three years of work as a freelancer, many accountants can expect to be charging from $50-60 per hour, but this figure quickly increases as more qualifications are obtained.
