The answer to that all-important question is as individual as the freelancer herself. In order to find a ballpark figure, one would have to know their skill level and industry, but any serious answers from individuals with those variables will vary greatly. For a person without a substantial portfolio or publication history, a realistic median starting salary for freelance writing might be between $5 and $10 per hour annually--that's less than minimum wage if working full time! But flipping through old issues of Journalism Jobs I see many freelance writing positions listed with salaries ranging from $28K-$64K annually. And on Monster.

Freelance writers make everything from $0 - several thousand dollars per article, and I think you'll find estimates of how much they make usually vary widely depending on the writer's particular style. A lot depends on what you do for a living now and what your goals are as an aspiring freelance writer. Why not ask somebody who actually makes money as a freelancer? (I haven't made more than $2k in nearly 4 years). This is really difficult to answer! Obviously it varies by profession, location, experience levels, etc., but I can try to give you some ballpark figures that other writers have managed to earn.

As a freelance writer, you not only set your own rates, but can have total control over your work life. You choose what topics to write about and the type of format you use to tell those stories. Writers have more control over their schedules, too -- after all, they're in charge of setting their own hours every day. A few other things I should mention: -Freelance writing usually isn't a full-time job. Many writers take on other part-time jobs as well as freelance writing so that group members can earn enough money for living expenses and pay back student loans.

According to Payoneer, as of 2018, the average salary for freelance writers is $36k. It varies wildly depending on the number of clients you work with and how many hours per month each client requires. $10-$20 an hour after it becomes a full-time job usually works out nicely and can yield anywhere from $40-$70k yearly income if done consistently and diligently every day ($0-500/week). For first time freelancers, we recommend starting at $15 an hr ($0-300/week) just to get the feel for it before looking into whether this should be a lifetime career or not. This way they could regularly make larger sums (e.g.

The simple answer is that on average, freelancers make more than non-freelance workers. For instance, in 2007 the median salary for someone with a bachelor's degree and over 10 years of experience was 67K (a little less than $8000 per month), while for freelancers it was around $70000. The reason why we know the actual number is because this study includes some real statistics on freelance work; whereas we don't have statistics for non-freelance work because it often falls under other categories like "less than 10 hrs/week," "partime," and so on."

There is no universal answer to this question. A freelance writer's income will depend on a number of factors, including what type of writing he does, how much time he dedicates to his work, and who his clients are. A large part of a freelance writer's earnings will be determined by the specific project at hand. For example, some writers who have written for magazines or newspapers may have earned as little as $7 per hour if they were only getting paid by the piece for their work. On the other hand, a freelance writer with a book contract could earn as much as $40-$50 per hour on top of royalties from book sales.
