Upwork's safety is a heated topic. The good news is that payment processors have been legally required to verify users for 13 years now, according to the law. This has meant that there has been a tension between the intention of upwork and risk control from scammers looking to take advantage of it. Those concerns have been addressed through feedback from workers through upwork's content management tool - allowing supervisors to filter messages. Some features, like Skype calls or phone support are available on some jobsites for some additional cost .

Upwork is safe in that your account is protected with two-step authentication, you are only connected with pre-screened freelance professionals who have passed an authentication process, and they have a trust rating system. But they do keep sensitive financial information on file so be sure to use extra caution if sharing anything private. And for most people upwork does stay legit by connecting reliable professionals looking for work or interested in expanding their portfolio.

If you want to be 100% safe, I recommend you never use any sites like this to do business. But if you are bothered by the occasional scammer using upwork, then it should be alright. While there should ALWAYS be caution when utilizing third party services for work purposes, anyone that spends enough time on upwork can tell you that it is not all bad. There are scammers and thieves on upwork just as much as there are scams in real life. However, people with accesss to large networks of freelancers usually know who's trustworthy and who isn't before hiring them or posting a job.

I haven't had any problems with them. Upwork is legit and safe to use if you're employed by an agency that needs freelancers for work-for-hire, or if you're hiring freelancers to do paid work for your side project (which many of us are doing these days). I like it because there's no limit on the total number of hours that can be billed in a given month, so even if need someone to take 3-month break from the site due to family circumstances, they should still have their profile available after they come back.

Yes. In fact, you'll need to do a quick search on Google for "upwork scam" to see that upwork has many satisfied customers as well as people who have been scammed on the site. In particular upwork provides a trusted hiring platform where freelancers can find jobs and employers can find qualified applicants from all parts of the world looking for work. And if you're ever in doubt about the safety of a job or someone's identity that you're interviewing then just check their profile first to ensure they are an actual up worker registered with Upwork before making a commitment to them!

Upwork is a safe site for freelancers to find jobs, yes. Workers have the added security of being able to turn down any job that doesn't seem legitimate or that seems risky in any way. There are also ways to flag suspicious clients. Having your bank account information associated with upwork will help you be all the more secure. Some people think they can avoid scam jobs by looking for them on upwork before they pay upfront - but scammers are getting smarter and using this system to their advantage, too - so it really helps when freelancers know how this works before they list themselves on upwork because no one can stop all scams in advance.
