Freelancer was founded in 2014. An established Freelancer is freelancing for over 10 years (2006) with hundreds of successful projects and happy clients. He saw an opportunity to make the process of "getting hired" more fair, fair, transparent and safer for everyone involved. Freelancing has become a common lifestyle among skilled professionals, whereby they don't work for one employer but gain contracts through bidding or ranking within these online job boards; it's also important to note that this concept is not new at all as it started way back in the 60s.

Freelancer.com was founded in 2009, but the company has roots that date back much further than that. Founder Andres Barreto started his professional freelance career as early as 1991 with an online game called TradeWars. He then became involved with email lists and open-source development, before launching JoinTheFreelanceRevolution in 2000 to provide information about the benefits of freelancing; MLToday (TradeWars' English language site) in 2002; ServiceRangers (freelancers who work for major corporations like Microsoft) in 2005; and later ProjectGenie (a project management network). All of which eventually converged into one big freelance marketplace known today as Freelancer. Freelancer.

Global freelancing platform Freelancer first opened its doors for business back in 2009, at the height of the global economic recession. The founders had an unprecedented thought: What was preventing domestic and global enterprises from scaling their production capacity during such a challenging time? Freelancers were freed of many commitments and didn't have to manage inventory-- making them attractive alternative suppliers. Contractors with diverse skillsets could come together over projects of any size or duration to meet clients' demands. So why not create a website where companies and individuals could find each other so more people could sell their products, services and expertise online? And so, this platform was born.
