    "Freelancing" is the act of taking on a particular project by yourself and doing it without supervision or commission from an agency. Freelancers work either for companies who need freelancers to support their business, or as an independent contractor providing services to clients without employment status. A freelancer has more responsibility than a traditional employee, but also has more control over their schedule and how they work too. That makes for a tradeoff that many people find rewarding. A freelancer can be anything from someone who does design side projects at night to someone who simply writes blog posts in her free time.

It's often more the norm than the exception these days as companies that need extra work on new projects or those with expertise shortages can suddenly hire somebody for really quick assignments and then dismiss them as soon as the project is over. This has been institutionalized by sites like RentACoder and oDesk, which specialize in connecting companies looking for work with individuals who want to do some freelancing. Freelancers can come from any industry, but they'll generally be either coding specialists, designers, writers and marketing experts. The reality is enormous companies like HP and IBM have transformed their US marketing departments into freelance marketing shops called "agencies".

Today it can cover any expertise that can be employed by an organization under freelance contracts. Freelancers are typically independent contractors who negotiate deals with both the individual they provide their workforce services and the organizations they provide their expert knowledge services. Typically there is no long-term service obligation on either side often making it short term deals between parties until termination of engagement is mutually convenient.

    Freelancing means someone who works as a freelance worker. This is any kind of work where the person working doesn't have a long-term contract, but instead gets project work when they want to. It might be something like writing newsletters for nonprofits or doing marketing consulting for small businesses. Freelancers typically set their own terms and rates so it's really the best choice if you don't want to be stuck in one type of job with one employer, although there are many negatives too. To give just one example, you're not covered by workers comp insurance unless you pay for that separately (which isn't cheap).
