Read the hints from experienced freelancers and have a strong portfolio. In this age of skills shortage, freelance work is one way to get a foot in the door for your next job. Getting started can involve creating a freelancer profile on upwork or somewhere else, but many employers will also want to see samples of your past work so they know you have what it takes before hiring you. Having an active blog also showcases your expertise over time and it may even lead to people reaching out to you with potential freelance project opportunities months down the road if they liked what you had to offer.

Be proactive in your freelancing--do not wait for work to come to you. Spend a few hours a week working on new skills or networking with other professionals. Be the first freelancer that companies turn to when they release a project, even if it's just an initial analysis - sometimes this can lead to work long-term down the line. Upwork is also very good at sending out job alerts via email that can provide excellent opportunities for freelance work; make sure whatever field you're in that you're signed up for those emails and checking them often.
