Follow a few simple steps and you'll be on your way to a successful freelance business. 1. Know the difference between being self-employed and being an independent contractor. 2. Register as self-employed or register as an independent contractor with HMRC--this is most likely done with tax advisers if living in the UK, contact them for information about this step. 3) Select a business name. 4) Create your branding including logo, website design, color palette, etc. 5) Determine what you will charge for certain tasks or various combinations of services--a good rule of thumb is to divide your gross annual salary by 2000 to determine a minimum rate per hour.

With so many different areas of freelance business, no one can be an expert at everything. The process of becoming a successful freelancer is to carefully identify the subset you specialize in within your field and then doing extensive research about what clients/consumers currently need or want.
