One of the best ways to get started is by reaching out to potential clients and offer your services. You can do this by sending them a nice email or connecting with them on social media. There's no right way to start a freelance business, but it's difficult because there are no guarantees you'll find success through this route. Some freelancers do well finding clients through word-of-mouth referrals from other established freelancers who have a trusted reputation in their industry. Others turn pro and build up a portfolio that they can use for online showings.

Determine your skill level and see what opportunities are out there for this skill. Research the current job market by networking at alumni associations, schools, churches or other places that you already have connections. Networking is an important part of finding freelance work these days since it's usually word-of-mouth where jobs get found. Find out what type of opportunities exist in the field you want to pursue, research them carefully and determine whether or not your skills match closely enough with their needs so that you can submit a competitive bid for said opportunity. There are plenty of resources available online to help determine which jobs might best suit your aspirations; it only takes time and dedication!

The easiest way to start a freelance business is by treating it like a job. If I'm going into your office every day and you're paying me for my time, that's a method of contracting work. You can even create an email account specifically for the freelancing agreement and get paid via PayPal or traditional checks rather than by cash, which might be more comfortable for some people. There are lots of other tools out there to make this idea more professional-looking, from invoicing software to third-party domain registrations. Once you have a system in place--and sometimes before--it's worth asking friends if they need some help with their company/startup/job too!

The first thing any budding business needs is a name, preferably one that's easy to remember, clever and full of your personality. Next come the credentials. You need a Bio page with a summary of who you are and what you offer as well as details about special training or designations that set you apart from others in your industry. Also submit an Invoice for work done so no one pays before being satisfied with the quality of your services. Finally, think about how to reach potential clients without neglecting social media channels like Facebook and Twitter; be active on LinkedIn; write posts for social networks like LinkedIn Pulse; change settings on LinkedIn home profile of profile to reflect which service (writer) they freelance.

First things first, you need to figure out what it is that you want to do and who your target market will be. If you're just starting out as a freelancer, for example, it may be by word of mouth inquiries or working on temporary projects with an employer before figuring out how to run the business. A few considerations that might help you determine where best to focus a side gig include. 1) What are my talents? 2) Who can I serve best with those skills? Which company would benefit most from my services? 3) What's one specialized skill I can offer others in exchange for money?

The first step of course is to know what you're interested in and specializing in. Gaining some experience before going out on your own would be beneficial, but otherwise the research phase would need to be done quickly so that it can't take up all of your time before you start. What about design work? Graphic design? Copywriting? Once you've figured out what niche you want to specialize in, there are a few major things to figure out- marketing plan (how will clients find me?), pricing structure (what will I charge for my services?), how much money do I think I'll need for startup costs?
